NIOS is entirely different from all other academic institutions. NIOS gives freedom in three ways… what to learn, how to learn, and when to learn. The learner has the option to choose subjects of his/her choice from the given list keeping in view the passing criteria.
What is an Open School?
Open Schools are a system of schooling which has no boundary for age and free from regular school attendance. People who were not able to complete their schooling due to various reasons can finish their schooling through Open Schools even after several years. The biggest advantage of open schools is no fixed schedule. Learners can write their whenever they are ready, they can even study 1 year program for several years. There is no necessity to attend classes as well.
NIOS Admission Date 2020
Admission for Stream – 1 (Block 1) is open till September 15, 2020. If you are registering now, you have to pay a late fee of Rs. 700.
Date of Admission for Stream – 1 (Block 2) starts on 16th September 2020.
Eligibility criteria
- Secondary Course – The minimum age is 14 years for the 10th Standard equivalent Secondary Course (Should be born on or before 31 August 2005).
- Senior Secondary Course – The minimum age is 15 years for the 12th Standard equivalent Senior Secondary Course is 15 years. (Should be born on or before 31 August 2004).

Documents required for NIOS Admission
Softcopies or Scanned Copies of the following documents are required to be uploaded.
- Recent Passport size color Photograph
- Signature (preferably in Black Ink)
- Valid identity proof (like Aadhaar Card or Passport or Ration card or etc.)
- Valid proof of Date of Birth (like Aadhaar Card with the date of birth printed on it in the dd/mm/yyyy format, Birth Certificate etc.)
- A valid proof of Residence (like Aadhaar Card with complete address printed on it, valid Passport etc.).
- Address proof i.e. Aadhaar Card/Water Bill/Electricity Bill/Voter ID/Ration Card/Indian Passport/Statement of Operational Bank Account/Appointment Letter from the Employer on Printed Letter Head, if living in rented accommodation – a copy of any proof of permanent address along with present Rented Agreement
- Class 8th mark sheet (in case of secondary course) or class 10th mark sheet (in case of senior secondary course)
- Social category/Caste certificate (in case the learner belongs to SC/ST/OBC social category).
- Ex-serviceman certificate (in case he/she is an Ex-serviceman)
- Disability certificate (in case he/she is having any kind of disability)
- Fail Mark sheet of previous Board
How to fill NIOS Admission form?
Step-by-Step process
- Go to sdmis.nios.ac.in
- Click Stream 1 (Block 1) or Stream 2 (according to your choice)
- Fill the required details and click on the submit button.
- An application form appears next. Click on Basic details.
- Enter details like the father’s name, mother’s name, mobile number, email ID.
- Click on “Generate OTP”. A one Time Password will be generated for validating all the details.
- Fill all the other detail like caste, category, etc.
- Upload Documents
- Click on “Other Information”
- Upload the scanned copy of the photograph, ID proofs, and other documents.
- Click on the “NEXT” button.
- After completing this step, a username and password will be generated, and candidates have to note it down for future references.
- Fill the optional details.
- Subject selection – Here candidates have to select the subjects as per their course and also have to provide previous qualification details.
- Selection of study center – Candidates have to select the study center as per their preferences. They can select a maximum of 3 study centers.
- After filling all the details and uploading all the documents, click on the “Review” button.
- Check all the details once again. After review click the “NEXT” option.
- Payment – The last step is to make a payment. Select your payment method and pay the fee.
- Candidates now have to save their filled-in admission form for future use.
